Project Horse Relocates to Modern, Accessible Facility

Project Horse is excited to announce our relocation to a lovely farm in Lincoln (Purcellville, Virginia)! Five of our "big horses" really enjoyed the new space during their first turnout! Thanks especially to Martha Wunder, Katie Lorenzen and Michael Alway for helping us to get the horses moved to their new home!

We are looking forward to many exciting opportunities made possible by our new location!

The Fairfax Beacon Features Project Horse

Mr. G. Michael Lane, Jr., MA, MPH, Deputy Director of Administrative Operations wrote this great article about a Fairfax County peer support group, Gartlan, that attended a part-day Mindfulness Workshop at Project Horse in July. Read about their insights and experiences during their time with the healing herd at Project Horse. There's always a lesson to be learned from the horses!

Thank you, Leslie Roberts, LPC, for volunteering your time to facilitate this great day for everyone! Leslie is a Fairfax County Prevention Specialist Supervisor as well as a part-time therapist at Project Horse.

The article appeared on page 4 of the Fairfax Beacon, a newsletter for staff of the Fairfax Community Services Board.

Project Horse Recently Awarded Two Grant Awards

Project Horse is pleased to announce a grant award from the EQUUS Foundation! We have also been awarded "Messenger" status, which is a huge honor. The EQUUS Foundation strictly evaluates equine therapy and rescue programs in the United States and only supports those providing the very highest levels of care for their equine partners while successfully and effectively fostering the human-horse connection.

The Mars Foundation has also awarded a $5000 grant to Project Horse to help cover operational costs. Thank you Mars!

Mobile Minis attend Loudoun County Public Schools

Trained staff and miniature horses travel to public schools in Loudoun County, providing enrichment services to special ed students. It's a unique, fun and powerful program! The horses quickly connect with, and motivate, kids that struggle in a traditional setting. Our minis help students open up, build relationships, increase communication and frustration tolerance skills, and promote self-confidence.

Three of our Mobile Minis unit - Jack, Penny & Fudge - are in the process of training for indoor service! We plan to have at least one horse ready by the end of summer 2015. Indoor training is literally opening up doors for the Mobile Minis program! Our horses will be able to work with more students, as well as expand our services to residents of group homes, shelters, treatment centers and hospitals.

Thank you MICHAEL ALWAY! Michael, a natural horse trainer based in Berryville, Virginia, has been generously donating his time, talents and expertise to help prepare our mini horses for the indoor service testing process. Michael's patience, excellent intuition and extensive natural training experience is helping our minis build confidence and learn to comfortably accept the broad variety of stimuli they may encounter while working indoors!
